History

Aso Sanjo Shrine (Aso Shrine Oku-miya) is enshrined at the volcanic crater of Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture. Its founding is traditionally dated to around 552 CE, during the reign of Emperor Kinmei, when the rough spirits of the deities of the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th shrines of Aso were enshrined here to calm the great eruption. Today it serves as the inner sanctuary of Aso Shrine, the highest-ranked shrine of Higo Province.
