History

Byakko

Aso Jinja is the First Shrine of Higo Province, enshrined in Ichinomiya-machi, Aso City. It enshrines Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto, grandson of Emperor Jinmu, and is an ancient shrine with a history spanning over 2,000 years. As the god of Mount Aso, it has been revered as a protector of volcanic calm and agriculture. The shrine's main gate and worship hall were destroyed in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, but reconstruction has progressed with support from local people and throughout the nation. Walking together with Aso's grand natural environment, it continues to be beloved by many people as the protective deity of all Kyushu.
