History
Okuhikawa Shrine, nestled at the confluence of the Tama River and the Nitta River in Okutama, Western Tokyo, is venerated as the innermost of the 'Musashi Three Hikawa' shrines, alongside Hikawa Shrine (Omiya) and Naka-Hikawa Shrine. The three shrines are said to stand in a straight line in the relationship of main shrine, middle shrine, and inner shrine. Listed in the Engishiki, an ancient imperial decree, it is one of the oldest recognized shrines in the Musashi region. The principal deities are Susanoo no Mikoto, Kushiinadahime no Mikoto, and Oyamatsumi no Mikoto — gods of water, agriculture, and mountains. Three giant cedar trees designated as a Tokyo Metropolitan Natural Monument stand within the grounds, bearing silent witness to the shrine's long history.
