History

Byakko

Shibagaki Shrine in Matsubara, Osaka, is said to have been established in the latter half of the 5th century by imperial command of Emperor Ninken on the site of Emperor Hansei's palace, Tanbi no Shibagaki no Miya. Emperor Hansei, known as Mizuhawake no Mikoto for his famously beautiful teeth, is revered here as a deity of dental health. The shrine was called Hiraniwa Shrine in the Edo period and was designated a village shrine in 1872. Today it is one of the six shrines of the Kaiun Matsubara Rokusha Mairi pilgrimage circuit and is visited by worshippers seeking blessings for dental health and good fortune.
