Joshin-ji

Jōshinji Temple is a Jōdo-sect temple located in Mukōgaoka, Bunkyō Ward, Tokyo. According to temple tradition, it was founded in the early Edo period by Jōshin, a disciple of Zonno Shōnin, the 16th abbot of Zōjōji Temple — the bodai-ji (family temple) of the Tokugawa shogunate. Following its establishment, the temple relocated to its current site in Mukōgaoka in the Kan'ei era (1641). During the Edo period, it developed as a branch temple of Zōjōji and an influential temple under the supervision of the shogunate's temple administrators. In the mid-Edo period, it also functioned as a center of Buddhist scholarship, attracting many learned monks and contributing to the culture and education of the time.
