Kaneoka Shrine is located in Kanaoka-cho, Kita Ward, Sakai City, and holds the former rank of gosha (village shrine). It is known as the shrine dedicated to Kose no Kanaoka, a painter of the early Heian period who is credited with establishing the style of Yamato-e painting. Kose no Kanaoka was active during the reign of Emperor Daigo, and his artistic technique is said to have had a profound influence on later Japanese painting. The shrine has long been revered by those who seek artistic improvement and those who love painting.
