History

Byakko

Yakuoji is an ancient Shingon Buzan sect temple on Nanahashi mountain in Imai, Ome City, Tokyo. Founded during the Ryakuo era (1338-1342) by the monk Ryosei, the temple enshrines Yakushi Nyorai as its principal image. It is also the twenty-ninth sacred site of the Musashino Thirty-three Kannon Pilgrimage, with a Kannon hall housing Juichimen Kannon. During the Edo period, the temple received an official land grant from the Tokugawa shogunate. Though struck by fires and natural disasters over the centuries, it has been rebuilt each time through the devoted support of the local community. The current main hall dates from the late Edo period.
