History

Byakko

Shiba Daijingu is affectionately known as the Ise Shrine of the Kanto region and is a venerable shrine. It is said to have been founded in the second year of Kanko (1005) in the Heian period, when the deities Amaterasu Oomikami and Toyouke Oomikami of Ise Shrine were invited and enshrined. During the Edo period, it received the devout faith of the Tokugawa shogunal house and was also revered by commoners as the "Ise Shrine of the Kanto region." During the Meiji period, it received the distinction of being a semi-imperially sanctioned shrine, and remains one of Tokyo's celebrated shrines visited by many worshippers today. The grounds feature a shrine building of the same shinmei-zukuri architectural style as Ise Shrine, and it is believed that one can receive the same blessings as visiting Ise while remaining in the heart of the city.
