History

Yoki Tenmangu Jinja is enshrined on Mt. Yoki in Hase, Sakurai, Nara. The area of Hase is said to be the birthplace of Nomi no Sukune, ancestor of Sugawara no Michizane, and was closely connected to the Haji and Sugawara clans. According to the Hasedera Genki, the shrine was founded in 946. It later became venerated as the ujigami (tutelary deity) of Hase. The shrine holds a seated wooden Tenjin statue bearing an inscription of 1259, recognized as the oldest surviving Tenjin sculpture in Japan and designated a National Important Cultural Property.
