Izumiryu-ji

Senryuji is a Soto Zen temple located in Moto-Izumi, Komae City, Tokyo. According to tradition, it was founded in 765 (Tenpjingo 1) by the monk Ryoben. The temple originally practiced Hosso and Kegon Buddhism, later converted to Tendai in the Heian period, and then to the Soto school during the Warring States period. In 1591, Ishitani Kiyosada, a retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu, designated the temple as the Ishitani clan's bodaiji and became its patron, contributing greatly to its restoration. A legendary spring near the precinct is said to have welled up through Ryoben's rain-making prayers.
