History

Byakko

Amanuma Kumano Shrine in Amanuma, Suginami, Tokyo, is said to have been founded in 768 when an imperial inspector of the Tokaido region enshrined the tutelary deity of the area. According to another tradition, Nitta Yoshisada camped here in 1333 on his march to Kamakura, and a tree stump on the grounds is said to be the remnant of a cedar he planted as a prayer for victory. In 1395, a warrior named Asakura Mikawa-no-kami repaired the shrine, which was then called Junisha Gongen. Since the Meiji era it has been known as Kumano Shrine and remains a beloved local guardian.
