Egara Tenjin Jinja is beloved as the god of learning in Kamakura, enshrining Sugawara no Michizane, the Tenjin deity. From the time when Minamoto no Yoritomo established the Kamakura shogunate, this shrine in the Nikai-dō area has gathered the faith of the people. Within the grounds stands a large ginkgo tree that turns a beautiful golden yellow in autumn, welcoming visitors with its splendor. Since ancient times, many scholars and literati have visited to pray for academic achievement, making it a venerable shrine. Situated in the quiet foothills of Kamakura, it is truly a sacred place for learning where one can settle the mind and offer prayers for scholarly endeavor.
