History

Niutsuhime Jinja is an ancient shrine situated in Kamitakamano, a sacred site in the Kii Mountains. Niutsuhime Okami is an ancient deity recorded in the Kojiki, known as the goddess of mercury. The shrine has deep connections with Koyasan and is said to have played an important role when Kobo Daishi Kukai opened Koyasan. The beautifully vermillion-painted shrine buildings are also component assets of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." Enveloped in the serene atmosphere of the sacred precinct, one feels purified from the depths of one's heart.
