Terukuni Jinja is a shrine dedicated to Shimazu Nariakira, the eleventh feudal lord of the Satsuma Domain. Established during the Meiji period, it stands majestically in the central part of Kagoshima City. Lord Nariakira is known as an enlightened ruler of the late Edo period who nurtured great figures of the Restoration such as Saigō Takamori and Ōkubo Toshimichi. His accomplishments in promoting industry and advancing the modernization of Satsuma are immeasurable. Though located in an urban area, the shrine grounds are enveloped in quietness, and many visitors come to pay respects to Lord Nariakira's virtuous legacy.
