History
Kagoshima Jingū is an esteemed ancient shrine enshrining Emperor Jinmu and his consort Apitsu-hime no Mikoto as principal deities. This place is said to be where Emperor Jinmu spent time before his eastern campaign, and has long been known as "Ōsumi Shōhachiman Miya." The founding dates back to ancient times, and this shrine has deep connections to the Hayato clan. During the Edo period, the Shimazu clan lords of the Satsuma Domain held great reverence for it, and a magnificent main hall was constructed. Even today, it is crowded with many worshippers during New Year visits, and is particularly known for prayers for protection against evil and family well-being. The great camphor tree within the grounds, exceeding 800 years in age, stands as a sacred tree with a divine presence.
