History

Byakko

Yushima Tenmangū, renowned as the sanctuary of the god of learning, is said to have begun in the time of Emperor Yūryaku when Ame no Tajikarao no Mikoto was enshrined. Later, Sugawara no Michizane was added as a co-enshrined deity, and during the Edo period it became known as "Yushima Tenjin" and was beloved by common people. As one of Edo's three great Tenjin shrines, it was particularly cherished by scholars and literati, and even today, during examination seasons, visitors from across the nation come to pray for academic success. It is also famous as a plum blossom viewing spot, where beautiful plum blossoms adorn the precincts in spring.
