History

Byakko

Izusan Jinja is a renowned shrine that has long been revered as the guardian shrine of the Kanto region. It is also famous as a sacred place of matchmaking where Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hojo Masako were brought together, with people from across the country visiting to seek romantic fulfillment. Situated on a mountainside with a commanding view of Sagami Bay, the spectacular scenery is also one of its attractions. Historically known as Soushu Gongen, it flourished as a sacred site for Shugendo mountain asceticism. The climb up the stone steps of the approach path is an important part of the pilgrimage to purify body and spirit.
