History

Byakko

Kimomiya Jinja is an ancient shrine representative of Atami, with its history said to trace back to the Nara period. What is particularly famous is the great camphor tree with a tree age exceeding two thousand years—this sacred tree is designated as a national natural monument and is a sacred existence. Since ancient times, it has been worshipped as a deity bringing fortune and good omen, and true to its name, it is a shrine that grants "incoming" fortune and has been loved by many people. There is also a tradition that walking once around the great camphor tree extends one's lifespan, and it is a special place where one can simultaneously feel the life force of nature and the blessings of the divine.
