History

Byakko

Mishima Taisha is a prestigious shrine with over a thousand years of history as the primary shrine of Izu Province. It is famous for Minamoto no Yoritomo's prayer for the restoration of the Minamoto clan, and it received the devoted faith of many military commanders. The shrine enshrines Oyama-tsumi no Mikoto and Kotoshiro-nushi no Kami, and is particularly known for its virtues of prosperous business and traffic safety. Within the precincts stands a golden osmanthus tree over a thousand years old, which greets worshippers with its fragrance in autumn. Positioned at a key point along the Tokaido, countless travelers have prayed for safe journeys here since ancient times, making it truly a premier shrine representing Izu.
