History

Byakko

Shofukuji, formally named Kongosan Shofukuji, is a Rinzai Zen temple of the Kenchoji school in Higashimurayama, Tokyo. Although the exact founding date is unknown, tradition holds that it was established in the mid-Kamakura period by the Kenchoji monk Sekkai Shingetsu. The temple founder (patron) is debated between Hojo Tokiyori and Hojo Tokimune. The temple is best known for its Jizodo (Jizo Hall), built in 1407 during the Muromachi period and designated a National Treasure in 1952 as a masterpiece of Zen-style Buddhist architecture. The hall stands along the old Kamakura Road and opens to the public once a year during the Jizo Festival.
