History

Byakko

Maeno Kumano Jinja, located in Maeno, Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, is a historic shrine founded during the Bun'ei era of the Kamakura period (1264-1275). According to ancient documents, the divine spirits of the three Kumano deities — Izanami no Mikoto, Hayatama no Mikoto, and Kotosaka no Mikoto — were invited from Kumano Hongu Taisha in Kishu Province. It is said that the Toshima clan, a powerful local family in Musashi Province, established the shrine as their clan deity. Since then, it has served as the general guardian shrine of Maeno Village, gathering deep faith from local residents. During the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate donated vermilion-sealed land, and the shrine received generous protection. The grand festival continues to be an important event uniting the community through portable shrine processions.
