History
Nagoya Toshogu was established in 1619 (Genna 5) when Tokugawa Yoshinao, first lord of the Owari domain, enshrined his father Ieyasu at the third enclosure of Nagoya Castle on the third anniversary of his passing. With a stipend of 1,000 koku and a brilliant gongenzukuri complex, it was considered the most magnificent of all Toshogu shrines. The main buildings designated as National Treasures in 1935 were lost in the Nagoya air raid of May 1945. Postwar reconstruction used the mausoleum of Lady Haruhime moved from Kenchoji. The current main hall, gate, and fence are designated Aichi Prefectural Tangible Cultural Properties.
