History

Byakko

Kameyama Hachimangu, located in Sasebo, Nagasaki, is the largest shrine in the city. Enshrining Hachiman deities — Emperor Ojin, Emperor Chuai, Empress Jingu, Emperor Nintoku, and Ukemochi-no-kami — it long served as the guardian shrine of the Sasebo naval port. The shrine buildings were destroyed in the Sasebo air raid of June 1945 and rebuilt in reinforced concrete in 1964. Designated as a beppyo shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines, it is best known for the Sasebo Kunchi festival held annually from November 1 to 3.
