History

Byakko

Koanji is an ancient Soto Zen temple in Fuchu, Tokyo, with roots dating to the Heian period when Fujiwara no Hidesato established a residence here. During the Nanbokucho period, Ashikaga Takauji invited the Zen master Daitetsu from Kenchoji as founding abbot, renaming and refounding the temple as Ryumon-zan Koan Gokoku Zenji. At its height, the temple boasted ten sub-temples and seventy-five branch temples, but repeated wars and fires led to its decline. In the early Edo period, it became a Soto Zen temple under shogunal patronage. The main hall, gate, and belfry are designated as historically significant buildings by Tokyo Metropolis.
