History
Choanji is a temple of the Rinzai Myoshinji School, founded in 1669 by the monk Rozan. Located in the Yanaka temple district of Tokyo, it was later converted to the Rinzai sect under the abbot Yokan. The principal image is the Thousand-armed Kannon, said to be modeled after the statue at Sozenji in Settsu. Among the Yanaka Seven Deities of Good Fortune, Jurojin — deity of longevity — is enshrined here. The grave of Kano Hogai, a pioneer of modern Japanese painting, also rests within the precincts.
