History
Oi Zaogongen Jinja is a shrine located in Oi, Shinagawa, Tokyo. According to tradition, it was founded in the early Kamakura period when Minamoto no Yoritomo, on his campaign against the Oshu Fujiwara clan, prayed for martial success and enshrined Zao Gongen at this location. The principal deities enshrined are Susanoo no Mikoto, Kanayama-hiko no Mikoto, and Kanayama-hime no Mikoto. The shrine buildings, which survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake and the devastation of World War II, preserve architectural styles from the Edo to Meiji periods. An annual festival is held each spring, and the shrine continues to serve as a spiritual cornerstone of the local community.
