History
Eitaiji is a Shingon Buddhist temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect, located in Tomioka, Koto Ward, Tokyo. Founded in 1624 (Kan'ei 1) by Chosho Hoin, it once served as the betto-ji (administrative temple) of Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine, flourishing with vast temple grounds and numerous sub-temples. It is also known as the birthplace of Edo sumo wrestling, and thrived as a cultural center of Edo. However, following the Meiji Restoration's edicts separating Buddhism and Shinto, the temple was abolished in 1872, then later reestablished. Today it enshrines Kangiten and continues to draw the faithful.
