History

Byakko

Hoko-ji is a Soto Zen temple located in Hinode, Nishitama, Tokyo, with the mountain name Shiotakuzan. It was founded in 1478 (Bunmei 10) by the monk Isen Bunsai, who converted the existing Tendai temple Bodai-in to the Soto sect. During the Edo period it held a temple stipend of ten koku of rice and oversaw twelve sub-temples. The temple has suffered repeated fires, and all current buildings date from the Showa and Heisei eras. In 2018, a great Buddha statue known as the Rokuyai Daibatsu, standing 18 meters tall including its lotus base, was erected on the temple grounds in prayer for peace and the happiness of all people, bringing the temple wide recognition.
