History

Byakko

Tamaki Jinja is enshrined near the summit of Tamakiyama, a sacred peak of the Kii Peninsula, truly a holy sanctuary in the heavens. The precincts above 1,000 meters elevation in the clouds have long been known as a sacred site of Shugendo practice and are also called the inner shrine of the Kumano Sanzan. It is said to be connected to Emperor Jinmu's eastern expedition, and within the precincts enveloped by primordial forest stands the divine cedar of ages said to be 3,000 years old. While the pilgrimage requires climbing a steep mountain path, one can receive special divine blessings and pure spiritual essence removed from the mundane world. Truly a heavenly sacred realm where the gods dwell.
