Keigenji

Keigenji is a venerable Jodo-shu Buddhist temple in Kitami, Setagaya, Tokyo. Founded in 1186 by Edo Taro Shigenaga near present-day Edo Castle (now the Imperial Palace), it was originally a Tendai temple called Iwa-to-zan Daizawa-in Tofukuji. When the Edo clan relocated to Kitami during the Muromachi period, the temple followed in 1468. In 1540, it was converted to Jodo-shu Buddhism and renamed Keigenji. In 1636, the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu granted it an estate charter, elevating its status. The surviving main hall dates to 1716 and is considered the oldest temple building in Setagaya. The graves of successive generations of the Edo/Kitami clan remain on the grounds.
