History

Byakko

Nezu Jinja is an ancient and venerable shrine said to have been founded approximately 1900 years ago by Yamato Takeru in the Sendagi area. During the Edo period, it received the patronage of the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, and the magnificent shrine buildings currently standing were constructed at this location. The shrine is particularly famous for approximately 3,000 azalea plants that color the grounds every spring. Loved since ancient Edo times as a renowned azalea viewing spot, it continues to be cherished today as the "Bunkyo Azalea Festival." The Gongen-style main hall is designated as a National Important Cultural Property, allowing visitors to experience the elegance and history of Edo.
