History

Byakko

Matsushima Jinja is said to have originated in the Kamakura period when the ancestor of the Shibata family enshrined a spirit from Katori Shrine in Shimosa Province. During the Edo period, the Ningyocho area flourished with kabuki and puppet theater, and this shrine attracted many from the performing arts. Known by the name "Ryofufu" (good couple), it is particularly revered for blessings of harmony between spouses and child-rearing. Due to its location in Ningyocho, it is also famous for doll memorial services, where many visitors come to pay respects and express gratitude for dolls and stuffed animals they have cherished. Amid the bustle of the city center, this shrine provides warmth and peace of mind.
