History

Byakko

Hyouzu Shrine is listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho as one of the twenty-eight shikinaisha of Izumi Province. It served as the general shrine of twelve villages in Kamorikyo. Although a fire during the Tensho era destroyed most records, making the founding date unknown, its history is ancient. The main hall was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the Azuchi-Momoyama period; this structure is designated a National Important Cultural Property. The shrine was listed as a gosha in 1873 and is also called Omiya, giving its name to Izumi-Omiya Station.
