History

Byakko

This ancient shrine was established in 1160 on the orders of Emperor Go-Shirakawa, who took pity on the flood-prone village along the Okawa river. Eight villages united to build the Jugo-sha shrine, enshrining fifteen deities led by Amaterasu. It was renamed Miyakojima Shrine in 1943. Within the grounds stands a three-tiered stone pagoda dated 1304, the oldest stone structure in Osaka, designated as a tangible cultural property of Osaka Prefecture. The shrine remains a vibrant community hub, hosting summer and autumn festivals each year.
