Bannaiji is an ancient temple of the Shingon sect that prospered as the family temple of the Ashikaga clan. Through the period of syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, it has also become a sacred site with aspects of a shrine. It is said to have been founded by Ashikaga Yoshiyasu in 1196, serving as the mortuary temple for successive generations of the Ashikaga family and bearing deep historical significance. Known affectionately as 'Bannaji,' its main hall is designated as a National Treasure. As befits a warrior clan's family temple, it is said to possess spiritual efficacy in both military fortune and scholarship, and to this day many people visit seeking spiritual support.
