History
Unryū-ji, formally known as Tenkai-zan Unryū-ji, is a temple of the Sōtō sect of Zen Buddhism located in Yamada-cho, Hachioji, Tokyo. It was founded in 1558, with Hojo Ujiteru as the patron (kaiki) and the monk Kettō Nōshō as the founding priest (kaisan). The temple is renowned as the family temple of Hojo Ujiteru, lord of Hachioji Castle, and its history is deeply intertwined with the region. The grounds also enshrine the Sangenzaka Kuruma Jizōson, a beloved local deity. Its head temples are Eiheiji in Fukui Prefecture and Sōji-ji in Yokohama.
