History

Byakko

This Hachiman Jinja, enshrined in Oishi, Sakata City, is a shrine dedicated to Hachiman Daikami, guardian deity of the Shonai Plain. Since ancient times, Hachiman has been widely venerated as a god of war, as well as a deity of maritime safety and abundant harvests. In this area near the Japan Sea, the shrine has been cherished as a place where gratitude is offered for both the blessings of the sea and the land. As the port town of Sakata developed, the shrine gathered the faith of many people—merchants, fishermen, and farmers alike—and continues to be beloved as the guardian deity of the region.
