History

Seiunji is a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect (Myōshinji branch) located on a hill in Nishi-Nippori, Arakawa Ward, Tokyo, bearing the mountain name Jōkyozan. The temple was revived during the Hōreki era (1751–1764) by Hotta Masasuke, lord of the Sekiyado domain in Shimōsa Province. It became celebrated as a cherry-blossom viewing spot in Edo, earning the name 'Hanami-dera' (Blossom-viewing Temple) together with the neighboring Shūshōin. As one of the Seven Lucky Gods temples of Yanaka, Seiunji enshrines Ebisu, the deity of commerce and abundant fishing, and welcomes many visitors during the New Year season. The precinct, adorned with cherry and wisteria blossoms, continues to carry the refined spirit of Edo culture.
