History

Kumamoto Prefectural Gokoku Shrine is located in Miyauchi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City. Its origins trace to 1869 (Meiji 2), when by imperial edict the Kumamoto domain lord enshrined 150 spirits—including Miyabe Teizo—on Hanaoka Hill as a shokonsha. In 1874 it became an officially sanctioned shokonsha, and in 1939 it was renamed Kumamoto Prefectural Gokoku Shrine by order of the Minister of Home Affairs. It was relocated to its present site in 1957 and now enshrines approximately 65,000 spirits of those from Kumamoto Prefecture who gave their lives for the nation, from the Meiji Restoration through the Greater East Asia War.
