History
Sugawara Jinja is enshrined in Sugano, Takaoka. Like other shrines dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, it is known as a Tenjin shrine. As the place name Sugano suggests, this shrine has been cherished by the people of this region since ancient times. Sugawara Michizane was an outstanding scholar and statesman of the Heian period, but he was also a tragic figure who was exiled to Dazaifu on false charges. After his death, he came to be revered as Tenjin, the heavenly deity, and was worshipped nationwide as the kami of learning. This Sugawara Jinja watches over the studies of children in the community and graciously grants wisdom and talent.
