History

Byakko

Koudai-ji was founded in 1608 by Kameou Ryoukaku, the abbot of Koutokuji in Hizen Province, at the foot of Kazagashira Mountain. In 1626, the temple relocated to its current site in Nagasaki. In 1642, Abbot Ichitei Yuuton received an imperial audience and was granted the formal temple name from Emperor Meisei. One of the Three Great Temples of Nagasaki, the grounds preserve graves of Nagasaki bugyo who died in service, the tomb of Siebold's daughter Ine Kusumoto, and hereditary Chinese interpreter families. The Nioumon gate, built circa 1680, is considered the oldest surviving shrine or temple gate in Nagasaki Prefecture.
