History

Kitano Shrine, formally known as Kitano Tenjin, is located in Naka-Rokugo, Ota Ward, Tokyo. Its former social rank was Mukakusha (unranked). The shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, and has long been known by the popular name Tome Tenjin, or the Fall-Stopping Tenjin. It was traditionally venerated for protection against falling from horses and accidents — blessings of preventing mishaps on journeys. The shrine is now administered as a subsidiary of Rokugo Shrine. Its grand festival is held on October 22nd. Visitors come seeking both academic blessings and the distinctive protective power of Tome Tenjin.
