History

Byakko

Hirata Jinja enshrines Hirata Atsutane, an Edo-period National Learning scholar who founded Fukko Shinto, whose influence became a driving force of the Meiji Restoration. The shrine was founded in 1872 as a private shrine in the Yanagishima district (present-day Sumida Ward) by Atsutane's adopted son Kanetsune. It was relocated to Koishikawa in 1881, and after the wartime destruction of that hall, moved to its current location in Yoyogi, Shibuya in 1959. The shrine is renowned for blessings related to scholarship, health, and prosperity.
