History

Byakko

Senryu-ji, formally known as Otakiyama Myoo-in, is a Shingon Buzan sect temple in Otome, Oyama City, founded in 1333. Its principal image is Fudo Myoo, said to have appeared miraculously on Lake Chuzenji at Nikko. Despite suffering repeated fire damage during wartime, the temple was rebuilt each time through the protective power of Fudo Myoo. In the Edo period, it received temple lands from the shogunate and was patronized by lords including Matsudaira Sadanobu of the Shirakawa domain. The secret principal image is opened to the public only once every 25 years.
