History

Byakko

Gessoji is a Buddhist temple of the independent Soto school lineage located in Kichijoji, Musashino City, Tokyo. Its mountain name (sango) is Undozan, and it was founded in 1659 (the 2nd year of Manji) by the monk Doigan. According to tradition, the temple was established as a central funerary temple for residents of Kanda, Yushima, and Surugadai who lost their homes to fire and pioneered the settlement of Musashino, forming what became Kichijoji village. The temple is said to be connected to the origin of the place name Kichijoji, making it an inseparable part of local history to the present day.
