History
Tsushima Jinja is the head shrine of Tsushima Gozu Tenno-sha, known nationwide as the guardian deity against epidemics. A historic shrine with roots tracing back to the Heian period, it has gathered the faith of people during times of epidemic outbreaks. The Tsushima Tenno Festival held every July is counted among Japan's three greatest river festivals, with the fantastical sight of straw boats adorned with lanterns crossing the Tenno River. Long cherished as "Tsushima's Tenno-san," it attracts many visitors especially during summer for prayers against epidemics and health protection.
