History

Byakko

An ancient shrine located at the mouth of the Kumano River, playing an important role as one pillar of the Kumano sanzan. There is an old legend that during Emperor Jinmu's eastern expedition, he received the protection of the Kumano deities at this place. During the Heian period, it served as an important base for pilgrimage to Kumano, visited by many imperial family members and nobility. This sacred place where the Kumano River and Kumano Sea meet has been revered since ancient times as the "sacred place of resurrection," symbolizing death and rebirth. Today, as one of the important destinations for pilgrims walking the Kumano Kodo, many continue to visit seeking inner peace and new strength. From the grounds, one can view the beautiful Kumano sea and river.
