Minato Fukiage Shrine is located in Onomachi, Wakayama City. According to shrine tradition, it was founded during the reign of Emperor Keiko in ancient times. The principal deities are Ame no Oshihomimi no Mikoto, a son of Amaterasu Omikami, and his consort Takuhata Chichi Hime no Mikoto, who are venerated for blessings of agricultural fertility and industrial prosperity. The site was historically situated at the mouth of the Ki River, a key point of water transportation. In the early modern period the shrine received the patronage of the Kishu Tokugawa domain and was revered as the chief guardian shrine of the region.
