Kongo-ji

Kongoiji, formally known as Komyozan Hensho-in Kongoiji, is an ancient temple of the Shingon Buzan sect located in Ama-ga-se-cho, Ome City, Tokyo. Tradition holds that the temple was founded by the monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) during the Kōnin era (810–824) of the early Heian period. It once served as the bettoji (administrative temple) of Musashi Mitake Shrine and flourished under the patronage of the Mita clan. During the Edo period, the temple received a vermillion-seal document from the Tokugawa shogunate. Though the Meiji-era separation of Shinto and Buddhism severed its ties with Mitake Shrine, the temple continues as a center of Shingon esoteric practice today. The principal image is Dainichi Nyorai.
