History

Byakko

Sango-ji, formally named Ishiiyama Sankoin Sango-ji, is a Tendai Buddhist temple in Fujimi-machi, Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture. According to tradition, it was founded in 806 by the monk Shodo Shonin. After periods of vacancy, it was revived in 1199–1201 by a nun said to be the daughter of Kajiwara Kagetoki. In the Eikyo era (1429–1441), Nagao Kageharu invited Zen master Gakko Shobun to restore the temple, and it was later re-established as a Tendai temple during the Bunmei era. Today the temple is known for its azalea garden and the legends surrounding its founders.
